TEAM SAMSUNG: Changed its location in office

Hey
Today we shifted our location in office. It was a wonderful event. Everybody was pretty busy with their shifting business. One of the employees took the vacuum cleaner and cleaned the space where we were going to sit from today.
The shifting flashed a bunch of question in my mind. I mailed them to my friends and got reply from both Rohit and Ajey. Rohit was aware of shifting as even shifted his location, but Ajey was unaware of the fact so asked me to just shift instead of running this into my brain. Some of the questions I asked them are:

1. Why they are all changing location.
2. Is there any logical significance.
3. Is it a usual practice in S/W companies
4. How much time they take to change positions
5. Does they start working immediately
6. Don’t it make difficult to work on an entirely new place.
7. Does it have a positive/negative impact and why.
8. Does we sit with same member as we were sitting.

Rohit answered them but I was not agreed with few of the answers. At last my shifting started, and I was involved in that. I like to participate with team rather than just being a spectator. So I shifted my lapy, the least weight one can have in office. I was my turn to help them in shifting. I started with the senior members, with whom I sit in office. So, I started with the cupboard of a senior engineer, which I used for keeping the lapy given to me for working here. Then Helped brother Hyung Hu lee and others in moving their stuff.
I enjoyed working with team and if ignored feel like leaving the place. It was a wonderful teamwork. Everyone was involved in that. Girls (Black and Red {their dress color, as I don’t know their names}) cleaned the tables with a wet cloth and men cleaned them all with Vacuum cleaner. Everyone placed their belongings in proper places and most of them were back to work.

Altogether, it was wonderful day, started with an offer from North America, the place I was planning to go since last three years, and a good interaction with team members. But the only thing hurts me is the missing of prayers (specially Friday prayer) here. I really miss the prayer environment here and have not been to mosque since last thirteen days. Moreover, eaten non-veg food for couple of times in lunch, may the Almighty forgive me for all mistakes I commit here and fill my heart with righteousness.
I strongly feel there is nothing in this world. We are to die one day and have to answer for our deeds. So I feel really bad to hurt someone and have bad feeling for someone. I have adopted the policy of forgiveness forever. If anyone hurts me I will forgive him and anyone likes me I will respect him and will stand with him forever.
I hope, I will start coding and test on Monday (July 16, 2007). I want to finish the work I have been assigned. Otherwise I will be always thinking about that and make myself inconvenient. I am positive and looking forward to finish the assigned work in couple of days. So today we were

Thursday-Week1:

The day started with a 2-minutes late entry to office. I was desperately waiting to have a look on the software requirement specification (SRS) of the project. It was being sent to me by an email from the project manager. I was badly in need of an internet connection. Hyung (my project mate) was on half a day leave, so no other guy knows about this project. I was waiting for the afternoon to see Hyung.

I went to lunch with Rohit’s teammates. We tried some rice item with the assumption that is a vegetarian. After eating it we came to know that it was meet mixed rice and we had it for our lunch. “Ohhhh God! Please forgive me for whatever I eat here.”

After lunch I was back to my desk and saw Hyung, a ray of hope came up for working on the assignment I was here. This was fifty day here at Suwon and still I don’t know what I am going to do. Visited Suwon for just three weeks and don’t know the project till one week, you can understand. Anxiously, I went to him, he wished me and I asked him for internet and for changing language of my laptop to English from Korean. He asked me to manage with the language but provided with an internet connection.

Hyung opened the SRS document from my official mail and asked me to understand that. I thought it may be a 50 pages document and I need a week to read and understand it. I was lucky, it was just a 5 document and only two pages out five were of my use. Read the document and tried to search some terms in Google. GOOGLE!!! was not opening!!! I thought again I need to compromise on restricted access to the internet, whereas, my friend Rohit was helped to install new English OS on his lapy and a full access to internet. I felt like leave the office and going back to home.

I gathered my senses and asked Hyung about this. He asked me to wait for couple of minutes. Finally, he helped me to access all other sites. Though he looks pretty busy he helped me for all these. Impressed me!

Got everything documents and an internet access. I Read and understood the document on the same day itself. As soon as I read the document, I started reading Image Processing documents from the web. Meanwhile, Rohit got in and we went to lookout for a cup of tea. One of my colleagues told me that there is a free tea and other drinks available on the same floor. I and Rohit went in search of that. We did found a counter but it was paid. We were saving each penny but cutting our food and walking down to office, how can we spend money on drinks. Slowly we started move out, I asked him to introduce me to other Indian in his project. We went to Balu, whished him and asked to help us knowing the free tea and coffee counter. He came, helped us and in a second moved out to other side without talking to us for a single second. Don’t know why did like that!

We had a tea and discussed about the Image Processing, I came to know about Image formats and headers there. I never worked on this, neither in wildest dreams thought about working on anything like this. Therefore, I started reading and collecting information on this topic. I was happy to get a book on Image Processing in C language. It really boosted my confidence. I asked for a compiler but they did not say anything and I could not understand what has happened.

At 6:45Pm me and Rohit decided to go back to home, most of the people were still working in the office. We decided to use office bus and moved down to the office bus station. Instead of going home we dropped in between for shopping at the ‘Home Plus’ shopping mall. Went inside and purchased some vegetarian food for next couple of days. It was 9:00Pm and the day was just like 7:00Pm. We decided to catch the office bus again to go home and started waiting at a bus stop. After 20 minutes of waiting for the Sumsung bus we saw one. But the driver never stopped the bus, as it was not official bus stop of the company. Therefore, we started to walk down the road and reach home. We learned the way to our home from ‘Home Plus’ and learned that the office bus don’t stop ever where as in India it does for employees.

Reached home on usual time at 9:48Pm and were in bed at 10:50Pm. Another day in life was over.

Slept tight hoping for wonderful Next Day……..

Day four: First site of Digital Printing Division

I started my day with a welcome rain and last official day with Cris Hao. There are some other formalities, such as an IP address and a official email account, to get on to work.

They gave us lapies for starting our work. Surprisingly, everything is in Korean language. I will change the language to English after few hours from now. Another thing we got here is the ‘New Employees’ Education Masterials’ S/W R&D 2 Group. It consists of many presentations on Software Engineering. The person who gave me this asked us to read it and get ready for work. I came as surprise to me when I looked into its contents.

For the first time I entered the lab I will be working for a couple of weeks from now. Most of the ppl were busy in embedded programming for printers. Hope I will be working the similar stuff. Till now I don’t have any idea of kind of work we are going to here. Probably will work on device driver stuff or it can be something other than this. Hey it turned out to be imaging area (Rohit worked on this). It looks like the stress is more here and probably I will miss Kolkata in this way. I was very relaxed there and know what to do and where approach. I had my own research problems to work on and already formulated the strategy for solving them.

I feel it really difficult to remember the team members’ names. Hopefully I remember them after a couple of days. Environment and work culture is different when compared with my previous work place. I hope a person will enjoy the life at an academic institute much more than an industry.

This definitely will give a lot of exposure to me as an international intern to the company. I also will learn how do work on value oriented products that have market value and can be easy accessed by the customers.

I hope for the best to happen to me here at Suwon Korea and the labs. Working on image processing will be fun, though I have not worked on it before. Hope to learn lots of good image processing techniques here. Application of very efficient algorithms can also be a major area I will be looking forward.

At the end of the day, I came to know about the project it is related to image processing and need to convert images between different formats, such as Pdf, Tif, Jpeg and other formats used in the market. This is a different project from, what I have done in my PhD. It looks challenging and I am happy to work on this.

During office time Cris (HR person at Digital Media) made duplicate keys of our apartment and handed over to us. I and Rohit were given new keys. A washing machine and dust bins were kept in house. He deserved a definite appreciation for his work during office hours.

Today as there was no IP and email for me I was informed that if I want I can go to home at 5:30Pm. I waited for Rohit and then we both started for home at 7:20Pm. The sky was as bright as 5:30Pm. Then we thought that the day at Korea is bigger than India.

For the first time we took the bus to go home. I took a round in the city and Rohit was checking for our stop. Unfortunately we dropped on a wrong stop and walked to towards home. On the way we bought some fruits and went to home. Reached fourth floor, flat number 404 in apartment number 922, we started trying the keys given by Cris and could not open the lock. Till 8:30Pm we tried to call Cris but he was intelligently escaped. We don’t have Chau’s friend number, by which we can call him and enter home with his keys. At the end we decided to go to internet and took a round of the city and spend an hour on internet. At 10:30Pm we came back to home and luckily Chau was there at home.

All together it was a tough day for us. We strongly believe that the coming days will be far better than this. We pray Almighty for the same.

Day Three: Orientation at Suwon

We were asked to come to the central gate of the Samsung electronics at 8:00Am. Me, a lazy bird, and Rohit got woke up late. Got ready and rushed towards office. On the way hired a taxi and tried to go to office. The central gate in Korean is called ‘Chaung Moon’ and only chau knows it, as it is almost same in Chinese language. The diver took around and left us there at central gate. We made a call to Cris from the central gate, he came after few minutes and received us. He guided us to Samsung Digital Complex Gallery.

At the entrance of the gallery a wonderful lady welcomed us with a group snap. We asked here what she will do with that, she just flashed a wonderful smile. She took us around the gallery and shown us event and achievement by Samsung year wise. At the end we enjoyed the movie clip on 80in HDTV with a superb sound system. When we reached the main entrance to the gallery the beautiful girl / Lady (don’t know) came with a bag consists of Samsung annual report and a DVD with our group picture graphically framed. This was the most valuable and wonderful thing we had in our internship.

At 11:30Am we moved to catch Cris at Digital Media building, which is near to Gallery. We called Cris, he came down stairs and took us to Digital Media Gallery. This was lunch time and we walked down to a cafeteria, were we had our food and then moved out. In the next phase we were about to visit Samsung’s Semiconductor Division.

Moved to Semiconductor Division and an HR person received us there. He was the same who guided us in Seoul palace and tower, wonderful man.

A presentation by a foreigner (US citizen) and then we were guided to Samsung Semiconductor’s Gallery. It is really a wonderful gallery. A must see for an Electronics Engineer. We were displayed to the whole backend electronic technology, right from clean room, wafer carriers to the final chip and its products. At the end of the exhibition, a prototype of the campus is displayed. After this we were taken to the production line and it really looked like a tough job there were doing inside the production line.

The HR left us there for going back to our home.

Within 20 minutes we were there at the Samsung’s central gate. It was just 4:20Pm and the next bus to our home was only at 5:20Pm. Instead of paying for taxi we decided to wait for company’s bus. After sitting for 15 minutes Shau (a girl intern from china) suggested us to go to home by taxi instead of wasting time there. We accepted it and moved out to hire a taxi. There were two taxies waiting for customers. The first taxi in the queue had a luxury look so decided not board in to that. But the second taxi driver refused to come until the first is standing there. We decided to go in the first taxi, and thought better we confirm the price first. Asked him the price but he was not able to tell that, rather shown one using his fingers. At the instance we could not understand anything but after few minutes other Chinese intern told that he ids afraid that the taxi driver may ask 10,000 Won. This happen after reaching the apartment the driver simply asked for 10,000 Won. We have to pay it.

At the end of the day, it turned out to be an expensive day for all of us. We learned ‘Never ever try to travel in taxies that look expensive’.

Day 2: internship:

We started from Suwon to Seoul on 7:15 AM (Korean time). The program was given a day before with details. The HR manager, Cris came to our room at 7:20AM and dropped us at Samsung Central Gate. There we met another two Chinese interns (forgot their name).
After getting into bus I tried hard to enjoy the company of other interns but fell asleep for three hours. Due to heavy traffic we reached Seoul in three hours. The program at Seoul was even fixed and was run accordingly. After Peter’s (an HR manager at for Samsung at Seoul) presentation we moved to a place at Seoul and then to the Seoul tower. We were lucky to get a little demonstration of the changing guards at doors of the palace. The soldiers were wearing a colorful traditional dress.

The palace was really interesting, as mostly it was made up of pine wood and has lots of paintings on that. All the palaces do have some common things, such as a screen reading table and folding partitions. Except king all other officers have to sit on floor. One king I forgot his name use to held his public meetings and ceremonies at 3:00AM. I do wakeup at 5:00 AM but cannot go to solve others problem at that time. There was an artificial pond and a banquet hall. Right behind the King’s palace Queen’s residence was there and behind that there was a garden. At the end of the palace you can find a museum and some statues of Chinese zodiac signs and few others.

The next hop was Seoul tower, one of the tallest towers in Korea and in the world. The lift was amazing, it was moving with the speed of 300 mph. Within no time we were there at the top of the tower and the whole Seoul was in front of us. The distances to different countries from Seoul were given, and we found that the path given to us was far larger than the direct path. Do check this distance and the path we traveled.

New Delhi --- Seoul (nearly 4500 Km)
New Delhi --- Singapore ( nearly 3500Km)
Singapore --- Seoul (nearly 4000Km)
Traveled path: New Delhi  Singapore  Seoul

After seeing these distances we felt that it was really a long and tiring path we were traveling on. Thanks to Sriram (HR Samsung India, HR manager). After this started to move for Suwom and reached just within two hours. Even during returning I slept tight till we reach our office. Cris dropped us to home and told that this the last time he is giving us a rid in his car and from next onwards we have to do things on our own. After reaching home, we moved around to search for an internet cafe to give a safe reaching message to our family members.

Slept thinking about another orientation day at Samsung Suwon Korea.
